Te-Erika Patterson of The Rebuild Your Life Project Web Series Faces Her Biggest Fear
The Rebuild Your Life Project was created out of frustration over the lack of success in my own life. After years of trying and failing, I was caught between a rock and a hard place on the verge of losing everything. At this point most people would hustle and grind taking abuse, ridicule and compromising their morals to maintain an income so they won’t lose their belongings. Instead, I decided to face my biggest fear, the fear of extreme failure by becoming homeless on purpose to prove to myself and my viewers that I can overcome failure and teach others how to do it too.
At some point in everyone’s life they will face the circumstance of loss or be faced with a situation where they have to take a huge risk for their creative, emotional or financial freedom. In every risk, there is a chance that they will lose out. I am teaching how to survive those losses so that they will never fear loss again.
In essence, my fans connect with my web series because they are being equipped with the mentality capacity to transform any loss into a benefit while watching me do it in real time. My videos are extremely personal detailing my highs, lows and triumphs. I am emotionally naked on the camera. I also present important tips on acquiring housing, creative ways to earn income, and the mental strength they need to overcome obstacles.
JAM: How do you generate new ideas and creativity when writing new episodes?
My web series is a living documentary that reflects the situations in my life. I allow my life to guide my episodes. But, during the making of my web series, I realized that I am the director of my life so when I want to have an awesome adventure, I create one and then capture it on film.
JAM: Web Series are emerging as a leading force of entertainment and education online, why do you think this is happening and what future do you see for web series?
Through the impact of social media platforms like Youtube, there will emerge new leaders who do not have to break through the corporate door to gain respect for their work. Everyone now has an equal chance to succeed creatively. It is up to them to recognize it and be faithful to their vision.
JAM: The Cast & Crew are essential for any web series to be successful, how did you form your team?
I am a one person team. I have a pocket digital camera that I paid less than $100 for and I purchased a tripod for $9. I edit my videos using the most basic software, Movie Maker and I have no formal training in film. During the initial Rebuild Your Life Project, I was homeless and still creating my videos.
JAM: What advice would you give anyone that is interested in starting a web series?
There are no excuses for not doing what you love. Even if you have to start out using a rock and a polaroid camera, you can still make your series, you just have to be more creative and diligent. This will benefit you in the long run because those who have a team when they begin become dependent on others to create their vision. If you are willing to do every job yourself and learn it from the most fundamental level you will be able to instruct your future team better and also able to pick up the slack if someone you hire is falling short. Be willing to do it all yourself.
