Sistah Did What? Female-friendly Comedy Web Series Launched By a Brutha
A female-friendly comedy web series written by a “Brutha”
Los Angeles, CALIF. — August 14, 2013 — “I didn’t start out to write a gender specific web series. It just seemed to happen that way,” says Michael Blackman, writer, director and producer of the comedy web series, Sistah Did What? “I had worked with an actress who had Hollywood experience, trusted me as a filmmaker, liked my writing, and wanted to work with me again. This was a great place to start.”
Michael Blackman is a ‘Brutha.” Shelli Boone is a “Sistah.” “There was no problem writing the web series from the black perspective, obviously,” Blackman says, “The challenge was writing the web series from the female perspective.”
It did take some convincing, though, for Shelli, who had television roles on Castle, Private Practice and Grey’s Anatomy, to be a part of Blackman’s project. “I went through several rewrites of the scripts, and several title changes before she agreed. I had one title called “We Love That Bitch” which Shelli resisted with a resounding “No!” I still laugh about that.” Shelli eventually agreed to play the role of Alex in Sistah.
Blackman says he began to realize the web series spoke from the female perspective when he started to write “girl talk” dialogue with Alex and her best friend Carmen, who is played by Dawn Noel in the series. Alex and Carmen banter about dating and the problems of being involved in unhealthy relationships. “That was a challenge for me. Now, as I’m writing the second season, I’ve learned to rely on my female friend’s perspectives and opinions about their romances.”
Blackman admits that his experiences from his personal relationships also play into the writing. “I think about some of the mistakes I’ve made, the things I’ve said, and how they may have affected the women I’ve dated. Writing this series has certainly been an eye opener for me,” Blackman says. “I do think some of my personal dating experiences will always be a part of the series. I just have to put myself on the other side of the fence.”
Other cast members who find themselves involved in Alex’s dating life include Alex’s outspoken mother, Linda, played by Marian Michaels, and Devon Stewart who plays Jason, a close friend. Linda is extremely blunt with Alex, especially when it comes to discussing men. Jason is the only male character. He openly expresses his interest in Alex, finds himself involuntarily absorbed in the female chatter, and intermittently provides his male take on things.
“Sistah, by far, has been the most unique writing experience I’ve had. Writing from the female perspective, for me, certainly has its challenges but I seem to be up for it,” Blackman says. He has written several short films that have won praise at the film festivals across the country. He has written feature film scripts as well.
